SPY CAMERAS GLOSSARY:
BLC - "Balance Light Control" (or Back Light Compensation) refers to the method used to compensate for high levels of bright light so that images contained in the darker areas can still be seen clearly. BLC becomes extremely important in situations where sudden changes from dark to light could make it possible to identify a license plate or an individual - such as when turning on a bright light or a flash from oncoming headlights.
CCD - "Charged Couple Device" refers to the image capture device in surveillance cameras used for the recording of images. CCD spy cameras use 12v instead of 9v and therefore tend to drain slightly more power than CMOS cameras. These CCD cameras also operate better in low-light conditions.
CCTV - "Closed Circuit Television" refers to a system of cctv cameras and monitors used to transmit signals within a closed/limited range. Implies that the signal is unavailable for public acces.
CMOS - "Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor" refers to a type of digital image sensor in spy cameras. CMOS consumes less power than CCD and is sometimes preferred for this very reason. The CMOS micro spy cameras are smaller and tend to operate a bit longer on a 9v battery than their CCD counterparts.
Dome Cameras - Spy cameras that are usually smaller than the normal spy camera and protected by a dome cover. These domes tend to be weather-resistant, and some are made to be tamper-proof and vandal resistant.
HAD CCD - "Hole Accumulation Diode" refers to a type of CCD sensor (Charged Couple Device) with a layer designed to accumulate electronic "holes" and thereby reducing noise levels.
LUX - The measurement used in reference to the amount of light necessary for the camera to operate properly (lumens/sq meter). Cameras with a lower LUX level will "see" better in the dark. A LUX level of 0 implies that a camera will operate in total darkness.
Spy Cameras - Cameras used to gather evidence and/or protect property or person. Can be hidden or in plain sight.
